What we'll learn this quarter...
Grammar
1. Verb tenses:
simple tenses - present, past, and future (eat, ate, will eat)
progressive tenses - present, past, and future (am eating, was eating)
perfect tenses - present and past (have eaten, had eaten)
present perfect progressive (only) (have been eating)
review of irregular verb forms (go - goes - went - gone - going)
review of verb and preposition combinations
2. Modal verbs (ex. can, might, should, must, ...)
3. Passive verbs (ex. The students were given a test.)
4. Adjective Clauses (ex. Students who miss the test will receive a zero.)

Writing
- The basic paragraph -Topic sentence, major and minor supports, concluding sentence, and signal words
- The basic 5-paragraph essay
-Introduction, 3 body, and concluding paragraphs - Using grammar correctly in your writing
-verbs, subject-verb agreement, etc.
-punctuation, capitalization, spelling, etc.
-formatting (indent, title, spacing, etc.) - Simple, compound, complex, compound-complex sentences
- Use transition words and phrases correctly in your writing
-Examples: however, in addition, in conclusion, all in all, for instance

- Writing to Communicate 2 (3rd Edition) by Cynthia A. Boardman
- Binder or folder, pen, pencil, lined paper - Bring to every class!!
- If you come to class without your books and materials (pencil, paper), you may be marked tardy for being unprepared for class.
- Buy textbooks at the UCI bookstore, new or used. Erase ALL answers in used books!

How do I calculate my grade?
# correct points / # total points = 0. X X = X X %
For example, if you get a 23/30 on a quiz (-7 points):
23 / 30 = 0.766 = 77% = C

- GW4 - Grammar Only: These are grades and assignments for grammar only.

- GW4 - Combined Grade: Used for midterm and final grades.
Remember:
- You will not pass the class if your grammar OR writing grade is below 73%.
- I cannot change your grade.
- If you miss a quiz or exam, you get a zero. There is no make-up.
- Check your grades regularly throughout the quarter.
- Come to my office hours if you have questions or are confused.
